Your region has the most. The question is what you do with it?

From the Arctic tundra of Canada to the volcanic highlands of Guatemala, The New World encompasses the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the nations of Central America — a region of over 617 million people and staggering geographic, cultural, and economic diversity. It is also home to the greatest concentration of Rotarians anywhere on Earth, with approximately 310,000 members — nearly a third of Rotary’s global membership.

The challenges here are easy to overlook from a position of relative wealth: deep inequality between and within nations, immigration and displacement, food insecurity in rural Central America, and the persistent gap between the resources available in this region and those available almost everywhere else. The New World’s outsized Rotarian presence is both a gift and a responsibility — with more resources comes a greater obligation to act, to give, and to lead.

In partnership with CATIE, a group of women living near Turrialba, Costa Rica, launched an ecotourism cooperative to attract visitors and grow their community-based tourism businesses. CATIE (Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center) is an international organization focused on education in science, community development, and sustainability in Latin-America and the Caribbean. Members of Rotary clubs in Cartago, Costa Rica, and in Denton, Texas, USA, partnered with CATIE to support the project through a Rotary Foundation global grant. The grant provides support for training in business skills and aquaponic gardening, and the development of an ecolodge for tour groups and training. 08 December 2019. Not all tasks are equal, some are worth more points because they are harder to achieve, some may require you to be in a specific area, while others can be completed anywhere and anytime. Like all the activities at camp, the instructions are important and so is your teams ability to work together to solve the challenges you are faced with. Wisdom isn’t always spoken — sometimes it’s lived. Find a staff member you believe to be the most seasoned in life. You can’t ask their age, birthday, or year — rely only on observation and intuition. Capture a photo with them.

Balance is more than physical — it’s a way of moving through life. Locate a long, narrow surface on campus that allows for single-file movement. As a team, climb on, find your footing, and strike a balanced pose. Capture a photo of the full team without anyone stepping off.

Beyond Words

Language opens doors to new perspectives. Find a staff member who speaks a language other than English and ask them to be in your team’s photo. Capture the moment and reflect on how embracing diverse voices makes every community richer.

Caught in the Act

Sometimes the best stories are the ones captured in secret. Snap a stealthy selfie of your team with another team visible in the background — mid-task and completely unaware. Make sure the moment feels natural and spontaneous. Reflect on the joy of witnessing others in action.

Five-Letter Find

Some clues are simple — if you look closely enough. Search the campus for an object whose name begins with the letter “S” and is exactly five letters long. Once found, photograph your team with it. Challenge yourselves to think creatively and have fun with language and observation.

Less is More

Sometimes the best outcomes come from the greatest challenges. As a team, pose for a photo where only one limb per every two people is allowed to touch the ground. Use creativity, balance, and teamwork to lift, lean, or support one another. Reflect on how constraints can inspire collaboration and fun.

Looks Can Be Deceiving

Sometimes things aren’t quite what they seem — and neither are people. Find a container or object on campus that appears full but is actually empty. Capture a photo of your team with it. Reflect on how appearances can be deceiving and how looking closer always tells a better story.

Family Ties

Leadership often begins with those closest to us. Seek out two staff members at camp who are related by blood or marriage. Take a photo with them. Reflect on how shared values and support systems can inspire leadership from an early age.

Doppelgänger

They say everyone has a look-alike. Choose one team member to impersonate AJ — through appearance, clothing, pose, or attitude — and capture a photo or video with the team. It’s not just about looks — it’s about capturing his energy and essence.

Frozen in Time

Time stands still in the right moment. At exactly 22 minutes past any hour, strike a creative team pose and photograph it — making sure a visible clock showing “:22” is included in the shot. Reflect on what it means to pause together, even for a second, in a fast-paced world.
