Named for the constellation that has guided Southern Hemisphere navigators for millennia, The Southern Cross encompasses the full sweep of South America — the Amazon rainforest (home to 10% of all species on Earth), the soaring Andes, the vast Pampas grasslands, the vibrant megacities of São Paulo, Buenos Aires, and Bogotá, and some of the most remote communities on the planet. Nearly 438 million people live across this continent.

South America faces profound contrasts: extraordinary natural wealth alongside deep economic inequality, rapid urbanization alongside persistent rural poverty, remarkable biodiversity alongside one of the world’s most threatened ecosystems. Rotary’s 90,000 members across the continent are working on everything from Amazon conservation and clean water access to economic development and educational opportunity — in communities that range from Brazil’s coastal cities to highland villages in Bolivia and Peru.

Maria da Costa gets clean water using a filter made of Brazilian clay. This type of filter removes bacteria while also keeping water cool. The Rotary Club of Teresina-Fátima, Piauí, Brazil, distributed these filters to members of its community. 19 March 2022.

Not all tasks are equal, some are worth more points because they are harder to achieve, some may require you to be in a specific area, while others can be completed anywhere and anytime. Like all the activities at camp, the instructions are important and so is your teams ability to work together to solve the challenges you are faced with. Wisdom isn’t always spoken — sometimes it’s lived. Find a staff member you believe to be the most seasoned in life. You can’t ask their age, birthday, or year — rely only on observation and intuition. Capture a photo with them.

Balance is more than physical — it’s a way of moving through life. Locate a long, narrow surface on campus that allows for single-file movement. As a team, climb on, find your footing, and strike a balanced pose. Capture a photo of the full team without anyone stepping off.

Language opens doors to new perspectives. Find a staff member who speaks a language other than English and ask them to be in your team’s photo. Capture the moment and reflect on how embracing diverse voices makes every community richer.

Sometimes the best stories are the ones captured in secret. Snap a stealthy selfie of your team with another team visible in the background — mid-task and completely unaware. Make sure the moment feels natural and spontaneous. Reflect on the joy of witnessing others in action.

Five-Letter Find

Some clues are simple — if you look closely enough. Search the campus for an object whose name begins with the letter “S” and is exactly five letters long. Once found, photograph your team with it. Challenge yourselves to think creatively and have fun with language and observation.

Sometimes the best outcomes come from the greatest challenges. As a team, pose for a photo where only one limb per every two people is allowed to touch the ground. Use creativity, balance, and teamwork to lift, lean, or support one another. Reflect on how constraints can inspire collaboration and fun.

Looks Can Be Deceiving

Sometimes things aren’t quite what they seem — and neither are people. Find a container or object on campus that appears full but is actually empty. Capture a photo of your team with it. Reflect on how appearances can be deceiving and how looking closer always tells a better story.

Leadership often begins with those closest to us. Seek out two staff members at camp who are related by blood or marriage. Take a photo with them. Reflect on how shared values and support systems can inspire leadership from an early age.

They say everyone has a look-alike. Choose one team member to impersonate AJ — through appearance, clothing, pose, or attitude — and capture a photo or video with the team. It’s not just about looks — it’s about capturing his energy and essence.

Frozen in Time

Time stands still in the right moment. At exactly 22 minutes past any hour, strike a creative team pose and photograph it — making sure a visible clock showing “:22” is included in the shot. Reflect on what it means to pause together, even for a second, in a fast-paced world.
